  • Essential information for owner-builders

    April 29, 2009

When you go it alone and build or renovate your home you may need help.

This is because it usually takes at least 20 years before a builder has the technical knowledge and experience necessary to build well.

Most owner builders make mistakes they regret or which end up costing them financially. Tyrrells has just launched a new publication – the Owner Builder Handbook. A comprehensive yet easy to read 100 pages. This is an essential reference tool for any owner builder.

After you get started help is mainly needed for:

    • an audit of the quality and completeness of the drawings see PlanCheck
    • troubleshooting throughout the job with the inevitable problem areas, eg setting the work out, planning and selecting contractors and suppliers, termite protection, complex details, waterproofing
    • quality assurance of the works especially a frame inspection, and Final Inspection of the works before making the final payment to contractors
    • stopping a small disagreement with a contractor from escalating into an expensive dispute.

One of our Tyrrells building consultants can help you throughout the project from start to successful finish.

“Tyrrells gave us so many tips that we saved tens of thousands of dollars over the project”.
